In Mali and Burkina Faso these head dresses are brought out during harvest festivals. The mask represents mythical beings with heads, horns, body and legs of various real and imaginary beasts who introduced ancestors to planting crops and taking care of them. These masks are always danced together  - male and female and often in great multitudes.
